Colossians 4:2-6 Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart. Pray for us, too, that God will give us many opportunities to speak about his mysterious plan concerning Christ. That is why I am here in chains. Pray that I will proclaim this message as clearly as I should. Live wisely among those who are not believers, and make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone.
Devotion to Prayer
In a natural world, prayer releases the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit and surrenders our will to the will of God. In prayer, you come to God with an alert and open mind that is focused on Him and Him alone. You thank Him for who He is and what He has done in your life. Here is a simple model to follow as you grow in your prayer life:
Commitment to Personal Evangelism
As Pastor T.J. referenced this past Sunday, many of us pray to be used of God and for Him to call us outside of the boat; however, when was the last time that you stepped outside of the boat of your comfort zone? Paul asked for prayers for many opportunities to speak about God. When was the last time you witnessed to someone about Jesus Christ- who He is and what He has done in your life? Beyond inviting someone to church, we need to pray for God to direct our words so that we can clearly share the gospel and order our steps according to the power of the Holy Spirit. We need to be connected to the Spirit through prayer and fasting. Alone we can do many good works unto the Lord, but it is only by His Spirit that we can do the works to see the miracles, signs, and wonders that He has promised to those who believe.
Choosing to Live Wisely
Paul said to “live wisely among unbelievers and to make the most of every opportunity.” As children of light, we are called to make wise choices not according to the wisdom of this world but rather according to Godly wisdom. Godly wisdom comes through the Bible, other Christians, and the still small voice of the Holy Spirit. Don’t get caught up with the Joneses of this world as this world is as a vapor – here today and gone tomorrow. Instead, choose to live a radical life for Jesus Christ that reflects your faith in your daily choices, words, attitude, and lifestyle. Stop worrying about what people think of you and start thinking What Would Jesus Think?
What’s your next step in aligning your life to reflect these three God-given priorities? I challenge you to select at least one of the following:
- I commit to praying daily for at least 15 minutes using the “Teach Me to Pray” guide
- I commit to fasting (giving up something) for one day/week and praying for the New Revive Indiana initiative
- I commit to attending the New Revive Indiana at New Life Church every Wednesday evening from 7:00 – 8:30PM
- I commit to inviting someone to Sunday’s service and taking them out to lunch afterwards if they are available
- I commit to sign-up for a 12-week Life Group starting September 6th
